What is home healthcare?

 

Home healthcare, simply put, is healthcare delivered in a patient's home.  Home healthcare services can range from in-home nursing care or rehabilitation following a hospital stay, to ongoing assistance with daily living activities such as shopping, meal preparation or bathing.

Skilled Nursing *

  • New Diagnosis
  • Medications
  • Wound Care
  • Enteral Feeding
  • IV Administration
  • Diabetes
  • Pain Control
  • Changes in Functional Status / Mobility
  • Changes in Cognitive Status
  • Urinary Catheter Care
  • Ostomies

These services are provided by Registered Nurses (RNs) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs).  They include health status assessments, teaching about disease processes, treatment for wound care, dressing changes, nutritional counseling, medication training and much more.

The following criteria determine if you may be eligible to receive home health care under your Medicare benefits:

Supportive *

These services are provided by paraprofessionals such as home health aides and certified nursing assistants.  They can include assistance with bathing, medications and personal care.

Therapy *

  • You must require intermittent skilled nursing care, physical therapy or speech therapy.

  • You must be homebound.

  • You must be currently under a physician's care.

  • All home health services must be ordered by your physician.

Many therapies can be provided at home to speed recovery from illness, injury or surgery.  These include physical therapy to regain physical motion and strength, occupational therapy to regain day to day skills such as dressing and feeding oneself and speech and language therapy to improve breathing or lung functioning.
